How should I store jewelry long term to prevent damage?

Ultrasonic cleaners are safe for diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and plain gold bands. They are NOT safe for pearls, opals, emeralds, turquoise, or any fracture-filled stones. If you are unsure, use warm soapy water instead.

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or anti-tarnish bag. Silver and gold scratch each other. Add silica gel packets to absorb moisture. A divided jewelry box works. Never toss all your necklaces in one drawer - they tangle and scratch.

Jewelry appraisals cost 50-150 dollars per piece, or 100-300 per hour. Some jewelers do it free if you bought the ring there. You need it for insurance. Make sure the appraiser is a GIA GG or has AJA credentials.

Steam and ultrasonic work by dislodging grease and skin oil. They are safe for hard, non-porous stones. Never on pearls, opals, emeralds, or stones with glue settings. That is why your jeweler asks what stone you have first.
