The difference is in how much gold is used and how it is applied.
Gold Plated
- Very thin layer (0.5 micron or less) electroplated
- Less than 0.05% gold by weight
- Wears off in weeks to months
- Cheapest option
Gold Filled
- Thick layer (at least 5% of weight) mechanically bonded
- Lasts 10-30 years
- More expensive but much better value
Gold filled is absolutely worth the extra cost. It has 100x more gold and lasts 100x longer.

I switched from gold plated to gold filled 2 years ago. My gold filled necklace still looks brand new after daily wear including showers. The upfront cost is more but cheaper per wear.
