Several effective methods exist, but some can damage your jewelry.
Method 1: Baking Soda + Aluminum Foil (Heavy Tarnish)
- Line bowl with foil shiny side up
- Place silver on foil
- Sprinkle baking soda
- Pour boiling water
- Wait 2-5 minutes
- Rinse and buff dry
Method 2: Silver Polish (Valuable Pieces)
Commercial polish like Wrights is safest for valuable or antique silver.
What to AVOID
- Toothpaste - abrasive, scratches silver!
- Ultrasonic cleaners - can damage settings
- Bleach or ammonia - corrodes silver
Do NOT use baking soda method on pieces with pearls, opals, or turquoise.

The baking soda and foil method really works! My completely black necklace looked brand new after 5 minutes. Dry really well afterward to prevent rapid re-tarnishing.
